The trembling rocked the Kunar and Nangarhar provinces around midnight local time on Monday (Sunday 19:30 GMT), local sources told Al Jazeera, reporting significant damages in several districts in the mountainous region.
Meanwhile, Anadolu News Agency said more than 250 people were killed and 500 were injured in the earthquake, citing Afghanistan’s Ministry of Information.
The victims said they were reported in Nur Gal, Soki, Watpur, Manogi and Chapa Dara districts of Kunar Province.
According to the US Geological Survey, the 6.0 magnitude earthquake was centrally located 27km (17 miles) east of Jalalabad city in Nangarhar. It happened just 8 km (5 miles) deep.
A moment later, another 4.5 magnitude tremor occurred near Basauru in Nangahar.
The effect of trembling was also felt in neighboring Pakistan.
