The Syrian Human Rights Observation (SOHR) announced on Wednesday that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad narrowly survived an addiction-induced assassination attempt while in Russia. The observatory claimed on the official account of social media platform X that Assad had targeted poison in a tactic designed to embarrass the Russian government.
According to an observatory report, Assad was discharged from a hospital outside Moscow early on Tuesday, September 30th, and his condition is now described as stable. Sources said access to Assad during his hospitalization was strictly restricted, and only his brother, Maha al-Assad and former Secretary-General of Presidential Affairs Mansoor Azam, were strongly restricted, allowing him to visit.
This dramatic development comes less than a year after Assad overthrowed on December 8th, 2024.
After Assad Oster almost a year ago, Syria has been tackling widespread unrest under the rules of an HTS-led regime. Syrian minorities are under immeasurable pressure.
