Tehran – A total of 119 earthquakes were recorded nationwide in a week, according to the Earthquake Network of the Institute of Geophysics at the University of Tehran Geophysics.
Statistically, there are 101 earthquakes with a size less than 3. 16 earthquakes, between 3 and 4 sizes. According to the IRNA, two earthquakes occurring in the country, ranging from 4 to 5.
Of the total, one was four on the Richter scale, which occurred in the state of Carman on August 21.
Of the states of the country, the 14-year-old Kerman had the highest number of earthquakes, followed by Khorasan Razavi with 13 earthquakes.
During the same period, an earthquake struck Tehran. No earthquakes have been recorded in Eastern Azarbaijan, West Azarbaijan, Aldabil, Ilam, Zanjan, Sistanbalichestan, Kazbin, Kordestan, Gilan, and Markaj provinces.
The number of earthquakes this week has increased by 32 cases compared to the number of earthquakes recorded over the past three weeks. This experienced a downward trend, decreasing from 163 in week 1 to 117 and 87 in week 2 and 3 respectively.
According to the seismological network of the Institute of Geophysics at the University of Tehran, a total of 6,272 earthquakes have been recorded nationwide in past calendar years (March 2024 -March 2025).
From the registered earthquakes, 150 were over four on the Richter scale. At least five earthquakes of 4.5 or more have occurred monthly in the country.
The Iranian plateau is located in a highly seismically active region of the world and is known not only for its major catastrophic earthquakes, but also for its natural disasters, particularly earthquake-related disasters.
Iran has about 2% of global earthquakes, but more than 6% of global earthquake casualties in the 20th century have been reported from Iranian earthquakes.
