Foreign Minister Abbas Araguchi has expressed deep regret over the unilateral enforcement measures taken by several developed countries.
Instead of fulfilling its long-standing commitments, some developed countries are deeply concerned that they continue to implement unilateral enforcement measures and protectionist policies against developing countries, Araguchi said they are working on a high-level meeting on the Global Development Initiative, with the theme of “Encouraging global aspirations and uniting to build the future of global development brewers.”
Such measures violate the fundamental rights of the citizens of the target countries and effectively target economic growth, poverty eradication and sustainable development of these countries.
As a member of the Friends Group of Global Development Initiatives, Iran considers it a valuable platform to strengthen cooperation and solidarity along development.
He said today’s meeting is timely and important as developing countries continue to face deep structural inequality in the global economic, financial and trade systems.
Eliminating poverty remains the biggest challenge for policymakers in many developing countries, Araguchi said, adding that hunger, malnutrition and food insecurity are rising, and the risk of hunger is spreading around the world.
Elsewhere in his remarks, he expressed his deep concern about growing digital division, especially in the realm of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.
He called for full and effective participation in developing countries to ensure comprehensive, transparent and fair governance in digital technology.
Current issues are not limited to economic sectors. For example, the worsening situation in West Asia, particularly in Gaza, has exposed its ongoing genocide, which supports international law and has not prevented crimes against humanity, Araguchi said.
Foreign occupation, aggression, inequality and injustice can reverse developmental interests and destabilize the entire region and the world as a whole, he warned.
Under such circumstances, it is more essential than ever for countries to recommend and reject unilateral rejection of multilateral cooperation, which poses a serious threat to world peace, security and development, he said.
He also highlighted the role of the Global Development Initiative in this regard by advancing the aspirations of developing countries, playing a more important role in the formation of a global economic order and promoting an international environment for sustainable development.
The serious situation in West Asia cannot be ignored. It says that ongoing crime in Gaza, particularly in the country, threatens peace and development in our region and beyond.
