Tehran – Spanish film director Fernando Leon de Aranoa’s 2021 film, “The Good Boss,” will be screened Sunday evening during a session at Tehran’s Alasbaran Cultural Centre.
Iranian film critic Kurosh Jahed will be taking part in a review session following the film’s screening.
“The Good Boss” (Spanish: “El Buen Patrón”) is a black comedy drama film featuring the lead role of Javier Bardem. The film is a chewing company satire that explores the themes of power and manipulation of workplace culture through the story of Giulio Blanco, a charismatic yet manipulative factory owner.
Blanco owns a family-owned business that manufactures industrial scales in a rural Spanish town. As he prepares for future visits from committees that may award his company an honorable recognition of business excellence, Blanco will make considerable effort to address issues within his workforce.
The story delves into swing tactics to maintain his company’s reputation, often interfering with the personal and professional lives of his employees, projecting images of success and stability. His ruthless pursuit of awards reveals the underlying issues of exploitation, superficiality and moral compromise that are common in corporate environments. The film uses his charisma to hide his ruthless ways, while also depicting a dark comic portrait of a man who is both charming and manipulative.
The cast features a strong ensemble, with Javier Bardem offering outstanding performances that capture the complicated character of Blanco. Manolo Solo, Almudena Amor, Oscar de la Fuente and Sonia Almarca conclude the cast of the principal, each portraying employees who are caught up in a web of swing control and ambition.
The film premiered at the 69th San Sebastian International Film Festival on September 21, 2021, where it attracted extensive attention. It was then released in Spain theatre. The film was a commercial success in the country, becoming the fourth-highest Spanish film in 2021, with over half a million viewers, earning over 3 million euros.
Internationally, “good bosses” have secured distribution rights in several countries. Cohen Media Group has won US rights and the film has been released in Italy, Portugal, Argentina, Chile and the United States. Its broad release helped solidify its reputation as a sharp and engaging social critique.
Critics praised the film for its sharp humor and Bardem’s persuasive performance. Rotten Tomatoes holds a 92% approval rating praised for their sharp wit and social commentary.
Reviewers appreciate its dark humour and keen portrayal of labor relations, often comparing it favorably with Leon de Aranoa’s previous works, such as “Monday Sun.” Some critics pointed to slight pacing issues, but generally acknowledged the film’s clever script and strong performance.
“The Good Boss” has won six Goya awards, including best photography, director, actor, original script, score and editing, and has received numerous awards and nominations. He also received praise at the Feroz Awards, Carmen Awards, and Platino Awards. Coupled with its keen social critique, its critical and commercial success positions it as one of 2021’s most famous Spanish films, resonating with audiences and critics, expressing the fierce effects of moral compromises that are often associated with the corruption of corporate success.
