“The Republic of Argentina is proud to recommend Rafael Grossi, Director-General of the IAEA, as a candidate for the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations for the period 2027-2031,” the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced, TASS reported.
The IAEA Director-General has demonstrated “the ability to foster political dialogue in the context of conflicts and serious international crises,” making him a suitable candidate for UN Secretary-General, he said.
On Wednesday, the United Nations Security Council and the General Assembly released a joint letter to begin the process of selecting the world organization’s new Secretary-General.
Candidates for this post are nominated by Member States, and each country may nominate only one candidate. For nominations, countries are to send relevant letters to the Security Council and the President of the General Assembly. Next, candidates must present their vision for the development of the organization and declare their sources of income. If candidates work for UN agencies, they are required to suspend their work during the election period to avoid conflicts of interest.
The election itself is scheduled to be held in late July 2026.
Iran accused Grossi of being impartial and siding with the Israeli regime in the IAEA report on Iran’s nuclear program. The Iranian government also blamed his false reporting on the invasion of the country by Israel and the United States in June.
