Argentinean President Javier Mairi endured a stinging election defeat in Buenos Aires, home to 40% of the population.
His La Libertad Avanza party secured just 34% of the vote, following 47.4% of Peronist candidate Gabriel Katopodis. The outcome – only eight districts won – was quickly recognized by Mairay as a “clear defeat”, but he vowed to “deeply accelerate” his austerity program.
Since taking office in December 2023, Milei has pursued large public sector layoffs and rapid spending cuts. Inflation has eased, but unemployment rates have risen to the highest since 2021, causing protests over pension and disability funding. The corruption scandal involving his sister is further undermining public trust.
With the October midterm approaching, and the Congress is dominated by the opposition, Buenos Aires’ loss is a warning shot. Peronist leaders described it as Mairay’s rejection of “chainsaw” politics, spurring a transition from conflict to concrete outcomes. The vote suggests that Argentina’s patience with economic shock therapy may be weakened.
