Kenya police clashed with protesters during their latest anti-government protests on Monday, killing 10 people, according to the state-funded human rights committee cited by AFP. Authorities blocked major roads leading to the capital, Nairobi, and most businesses were closed while unrestrained.
The protesters lit the bonfire and threw stones at the police. Police fired and threw tear gas cans, causing the demonstrators to be injured. The young man carried another man and said that his shirt was soaked with blood and he had been shot. The protests were reported in 17 of the 47 counties.
For weeks, Kenyan youth and others have been protesting police brutality and poor governance, while demanding President William Root’s resignation over suspected corruption and high cost of living.
July 7, known as Sabah Sabah, marked the first major protest in Kenya’s history, calling on then President Daniel Arup Moy (Loud leader) for the transition from a one-party nation to a multi-party democracy realized in the 1992 election. Sabah Sabah is the Swahili word for “Seven Seven.”
Police officers on Monday stopped private and public vehicles from accessing Nairobi city centre. They also prevented most pedestrians from entering the capital, allowing only those who were deemed to have essential obligations. The road leading to Congress – attacked in protest last year – and the president’s office was barricaded using razor wires.
