Police reported that multiple tourists suffered gunshot wounds in Tuesday’s “terrorist attack,” Al Jazeera reported, with visitors visiting Baisalang Meadow, about 5km (3 miles) from Pahargam, a resort town in the conflict area.
“The attack is much greater than what we have focused on civilians in recent years,” Prime Minister Omar Abdullah, an elected official in the region, wrote on social media.
Indian police told The Associated Press that at least 26 people were killed and 17 were injured in the attack.
The Kashmir Resistance, a lesser-known group, has argued responsibility for attacks on social media messages. More than 85,000 “outsiders” have settled in the area, expressing their dissatisfaction that they have spurred what is known as “demographic changes.”
According to Indian security agencies, Kashmir’s resistance is the forefront of Pakistan-based militants such as Rashkar Aetaiba and Hizbul Mujahideen, who are fighting Kashmir’s Indian rule. Pakistan said it only provides moral and diplomatic support.
