A fiery explosion hit a car parked near the Red Fort on Monday night, killing eight people and a powerful explosion setting several cars ablaze and breaking their windows, local media in India said.
Officials said several people may be injured.
Police have put Delhi on high alert.
According to the Delhi Fire Department, police cordoned off the scene and seven fire tenders were rushed to the spot.
The explosion was so powerful that it broke the windows of cars parked meters away and was heard in nearby buildings in the busy area.
“The explosion took place in a car parked near Gate 1 of the Red Fort metro station. The intensity was quite high. There is a risk of injuries,” said a senior official of the Delhi Fire Department.
Footage of the incident showed a pillar of flame rising from the burning car.
It was later reported that 12 other people were injured in the explosion.
