Filming was held at Yardfest Center, which follows the campus of Elizabeth City State University, a school spirit event that is part of the university’s weekly Viking Fest celebration, according to a university statement. The North Carolina Bureau of Investigation said the shooting took place around 12:30am.
The 24-year-old man, who was not a student at the school, was declared dead, the university said. USA Today reported that his identity was not announced immediately after he withheld notice of his next relative.
Four people, including three students, have been injured by bullets, according to the university. The university said two other students were injured in “the fuss that followed.”
According to the university, all victims were taken to a local medical centre for treatment, and the injured were not considered life-threatening.
The shooting prompted a campus blockade, and the university issued shelter orders for all students. The lockdown was later lifted, and the school said it had increased police patrols across campus as a precaution.
