In “10 Fundamental Principles of Good Parenting,” Lawrence Steinberg integrates years of research to present a practical guide for parents to navigate the complexities of raising happy and healthy children. This authoritative book offers essential insights that apply to all families, regardless of the background that serves as a roadmap from childhood to adolescence.
Steinberg argues that effective parenting principles are simple and universally related. Each of the 10 principles is clearly explained, supported by anecdotes and real-life examples. For example, he emphasizes the concept that “what you do is important,” and emphasizes that parents have a major impact on their child’s development beyond genetics. Other principles include “establishing rules and restrictions,” which will provide structures and discuss the importance of dealing with rule-based conflicts, and “helps promote child independence.”
With a warm and authoritative tone, Steinberg’s book serves as an intelligent manual for parents aimed at fostering a positive environment for children, increasing their own parenting confidence. He recognizes the role of peers and media, but emphasizes that parental influence is the most important.
Throughout the book, Steinberg offers practical strategies for common parenting challenges. He likens raising children to building a boat, and while construction is rewarding, he has seen its launches as well. His appeal for positive and respectful involvement from parents emphasizes the creation of an emotionally healthy atmosphere for children.
Filled with important messages about parenting responsibility and reward, “10 Basic Principles of Good Parenting” is an important resource for both new and experienced parents, reinforcing that nothing more important to a child’s healthy development than loving, guiding and respecting.
