The gunman, a former student at a school in the southern city of Glaz, had legally owned two firearms he used at the Lampage: a shotgun and a Glock pistol, Reuters reported.
Under current rules, after waiting three business days, a shotgun can be purchased by adults who are not prohibited from owning weapons.
Glock requires a gun permit, which means that he must be over 21 years old and pass a psychological test.
After the Cabinet meeting, the government said raising the minimum age for gun permits from 21 to 25 would make psychology tests more stringent and increase the “cooling stage” for all weapons to four weeks.
The school shooter identified as Arthur A by the Austrian media failed a psychological test, which is part of the military service screening, but the military is not currently permitted to share that information.
The government plans to ensure that such information will be shared and considered in applications for gun permits, the government said in a statement issued after the press conference.
