Local Azeri media such as “Report” have reported that the current contract has reached a new contract and is currently in the process of being signed, as it is set to expire this year.
Official data show that Naktiban’s annual gas demand ranges from 26 billion to 300 million cubic meters. To meet this demand, Azerbaijan signed a swap-based agreement with Iran in 2005. Under this mechanism, Iran fed gas to Naktiban from Jurfa and received comparable amounts of gas from Azerbaijan via Azara.
Azeri media added that 188.5 million cubic meters of gas were transported through Iran to Nahtiban from January 1 to August 21, 2025. Since 2006, gas delivery has been underway along this route.
SOCAR said that gas transport through the pipeline has not yet begun for the Igdır-Nakhchivan pipeline, commissioned on March 5th. The pipeline’s capacity is 2 million cubic meters per day.
