A massive explosion has been taking place in the port city of Bandar Abbas in southwestern Iran, causing 516 people to be injured, a spokesman for the country’s emergency services said.
Images and videos from the port, one of Iran’s main oil facilities, show towering pillars of thick, gray smoke rising from parts of the complex’s Shahid Rajaee.
Iran’s state-run media outlet Tasnim reported that the explosion was littered with glass and debris across a wide area, citing emergency services. There were no confirmed deaths.
A Tasnim reporter said emergency services had arrived on the scene but said “the port remains in chaotic state” and that much of the building had been severely damaged.
Tasnim also reported that the fuel tank “exploded for unknown reasons” and port operations had been stopped. State Broadcasting Station Ilib said the explosion occurred in the port’s chemical and sulfur regions.
