One of the world’s most advanced combat jets, the 88 million pound aircraft landed at Kagoshima International Airport around 11:30am local time.
It was run by the HMS Prince of Wales as part of the British Career Strike Group in the Indo-Pacific.
Runway operations were stopped for nearly 20 minutes and the jets moved to the taxiway for a check, Kyodo News reported.
According to The Telegraph, Japan’s Ministry of Defense had confirmed that the plane had engineering issues and was being tested to ensure that it could rejoin the career group as soon as possible.
The footage shows that planes parked near the runway at the international airport do not cause any visible damage.
The British career strike group, which includes the HMS Prince of Wales and multiple escort ships, is conducting joint exercises with Japan and the US military under Operation High Mast, aimed at demonstrating UK security commitments in the Indo-Pacific.
The drills were scheduled to begin on August 4th and run until August 12th.
This is the second incident involving a British F-35B fighter jet within two months.
Another F-35B jet from the same strike group was stuck in India for more than five weeks after an emergency landing in June.
The jet detoured to Thiruvananthapuram airport in southern Kerala on June 14 due to bad weather and low fuel in the Indian Ocean, and then reported a hydraulic system fault affecting the landing gear, brakes and control surfaces.
