TEHRAN – The ancient city of Kashan in central Iran has been included in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in recognition of its unique architecture and cultural heritage.
Approval for Kashan to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) as a creative city in the field of architecture was obtained by Hassan Fartusi, Secretary-General of Iran’s National Commission for UNESCO, at the 43rd UNESCO General Assembly held in Samarkand on October 31, coinciding with World Cities Day, which was also attended by Science Minister Hossein Simai Salaf, IRNA reported on Saturday.
This event is a turning point in the path of sustainable development of Iranian Islamic culture and architecture, the report said.
Kashan was recognized as one of the outstanding examples of sustainable architecture and true civilizational heritage in the field of architecture, along with cities such as Rome, Paris and Barcelona.
UCCN brings together more than 300 cities around the world in a variety of fields, from architecture and crafts to literature, music and food, with the aim of strengthening the role of creativity in sustainable urban development.
After careful consultation, Fartusi received Casshan’s approval to join the UCCN.
This action once again highlighted the Islamic Republic of Iran’s role in the field of cultural diplomacy and world architecture.
From its glorious heritage to its innovative future, Kashan is considered one of the world’s finest examples of authentic Iranian-Islamic architecture, with more than 1,700 historical monuments, including 330 Nationally Registered Monuments and one World Registered Monument.
This historic city is a beautiful combination of science, art, and desert ecology, reflected in its traditional architectural forms.
From the Abbasi and Boroujerdyha families to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Finn Gardens, Kashan is a treasure trove of climate wisdom, architectural aesthetics, and the connection between humans and nature. It is a globalized treasure thanks to its participation in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN).
Kashan’s participation in this global network marks the beginning of a new chapter of international cooperation, gathering support resources and recreating authentic Iranian architecture in the context of sustainable urban development.
This national success is the result of the support of the local institution Kashan Municipality, the major efforts of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts, and the facilitative role of the National Commission for UNESCO in Iran.
