The Canadian Liberal Party, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, has won the country’s federal election, Canadian Media Project, following a campaign covered in ruthless provocation and sudden trade tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.
CNN affiliates CTV and CBC both predicted that the Liberal Party would win enough seats to form the government for the fourth year in a row. However, with votes still counting, CBC News said it’s too early to say whether it’s a minority or a majority government.
Conservative opposition leader Pierre Polyable admitted his defeat Tuesday night, saying Carney had won enough seats to form a “sparkly razor-spark government.”
Former central bank Carney, 60, has led a wave of anti-Trump sentiment since winning a party leadership contest in a landslide after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned last month. He annexed the people with the “51st State” in response to the threat of the US president, making Canadian defense a central part of his platform.
