The comments showed the extent to which relations between the US and Canada have worsened since Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Canada and annex it as the 51st state, CNBC reported.
The next election was not scheduled until October 20th, but Carney hopes that Trump will capitalize on his notable recovery by the Liberal Party in polls since January, when Canada and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau began announcing his resignation.
After being sworn in as prime minister on March 14th, Carney worked with Trump and said he could respect him. However, on Sunday he took a more combative approach.
“We are facing the most important crisis of our life due to President Trump’s unfair trade actions and his threat to our sovereignty,” Carney told reporters after the governor general, a personal representative of Canadian head of state, King Charles, approved the election request.
