China will impose a 15% tariff on coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from the United States in retaliation for Washington’s 10% tax on Chinese products, media reported Tuesday.
China’s Treasury Ministry also announced on Tuesday that there will be 10% tariffs on US imports of crude oil, agricultural machinery, large-scale variable vehicles and pickup trucks.
The new measures responded to a “unilateral tariff hike” by the US, and Washington’s decision “seriously violates the rules of the World Trade Organization, does nothing to resolve its own issues, and China and China’s usual economic and trade cooperation, the United States.”
Beijing’s tariffs, which came into effect on February 10, came just after US President Donald Trump said he would call on his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in the next 24 hours.
On Saturday, Trump announced drastic measures against top trading partners, including Canada and Mexico. Goods from China already face an additional 10% tariff in addition to their obligation to withstand.
