The Pakistan Navy launched its second Baptist-class submarine, PNS Shushuk, at a ceremony held in China on March 15, 2025, military media said.
According to ISPR, the event was attended by Admiral Owais Ahmed Birgrami as his lead guest, with senior officials from both countries, reported by Business Recorder.
During the ceremony, Admiral Birgrami emphasized the importance of maritime security and the role of the Pakistan navy in protecting national interests and maintaining a favorable maritime environment.
“This project will undoubtedly add a new dimension to Pak-China’s friendship,” he said, highlighting the strategic significance of the submarine program.
Hunger class submarines are a key component of Pakistan’s efforts to modernize the naval fleet and increase defensive capabilities in the Indian Ocean region.
The project is part of a contract signed between Pakistan and China during the Pakistan president’s visit to Pakistan, and includes the acquisition of eight hangar-class submarines.
Under the agreement, four submarines will be built in China, with the remaining four being built under a Transfer of Technology (TOT) arrangement at the Karachi Shipyard.
