According to guest speakers in the latest episode of The China Economic Roundtable, an all-media talk show hosted by Xinhua News Agency, China’s National Economic Development Zone serves as a powerful engine for regional growth and promotes industrial advancement both in the less prosperous region.
Zones play a leading role in their respective states or regions. Zones specializing in core industries will expand the economic impact of areas that have developed in less developed regions and accelerate development, said Ji Xiaofeng, an employee of the Ministry of Foreign Investment, Ministry of Commerce.
Ji noted that zones act not only as a platform for global openness, but also as a hub for orderly interregional industrial transfer. While strengthening the development of major competitive industries, the ministry is fully utilizing the radiative effects of the zone on host regions, she added.
For example, Beijing’s economic and technological development sector has actively expanded its production and supply chains to nearby areas, allowing local businesses to benefit from flagship companies and achieve mutual growth.
The ministry also prioritizes deepening relationships between regional industry leaders through interactions between the Eastern and Western Development Zones, JI said.
China established its first national-level economic development zone in the city of Darian in the northeastern region. By 2024, the number of such zones had reached 232, generating regional GDP of 16.9 trillion yuan (approximately USD 2.36 trillion).
