China has made a continuous effort in February 2021 to consolidate and expand the achievements of poverty alleviation in the country’s five-year transition period, and declared its complete victory in the eradication of absolute poverty, a think tank report said Friday.
The report entitled “Efforts for a Better Living for People: Practical and Theoretical Innovations in China to Integrate and Expand the Achievement of Poverty Relief” was released by Xinhua Institute, the national high-level think tank of New Xinhua News Agency.
Following its victory in the battle against poverty, China has set a five-year transition period to consolidate and expand its results, according to the report.
In response to complex challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic, economic headwinds and widening global developmental gaps, China has worked to close urban disparities by deepening East and West collaborations to promote experiences from Zhijiang’s “Green Rural Revival Program” and expanding efforts to widen the gap between regional imbalances and ordinary nutrition between immature areas.
2025 is the final year of a five-year transition period. Throughout this period, China said it has firmly supported the final outcome to prevent major recurrence from poverty.
This is reflected in employment and income. For example, at the end of 2024, 33.05 million people from once-poverty households were working in employment. This figure has steadily exceeded 30 million for the fourth consecutive year.
In 2024, per capita disposable income for rural residents in the poverty-stricken county reached 17,522 yuan (approximately 2,450 USD), an increase of 24.7% in 2021.
The report also summarized how the transition framework constituted four long-term mechanisms to prevent recurrence to poverty. This was reflected through responsibility, policy, support for resources and funding, and continuity of poverty oversight.
“As a pivotal institutional arrangement for the transition from eradicating absolute poverty to the pursuit of common prosperity, China’s five-year transition period has established a comprehensive mechanism to monitor and prevent reversion to poverty,” he added.
