The battle centers around the camp in Zamzam, along with nearby Abu Shouk camp, hosted by around 700,000 people who were forced into the Sudan war. According to Reuters, cited by CNN, the attack destroyed shelters, markets and medical facilities, the aid group said.
The RSF said the camp is being used as a base by what is called the “merc sect.” However, humanitarian groups have accused the assault of vulnerable civilians, including women, children and elderly people, who are already facing hunger.
The Sudan Liberation Army (SLA), a Darfur militia allied with the national army, is fighting the RSF around Al Fasir city, about 15 km (9.3 miles) from Zamzam, with the help of other local armed groups.
Tens of thousands of camp residents fled to Al Fasir on foot, escaped the overwhelming shelter, and now sleep outside without food, water or medicine.
The city, the capital of Sudan’s North Darfur, was hit by heavy artillery fire and ground attacks by the RSF on Sunday, and the SLA said it is seeking military support from Sudanese troops and Allied factions.
