Columbia University said Tuesday it approved students for the library acquisition in May and the protest camp in the spring of 2024, U.S. media reported.
Penalties arise as universities face intense government pressure to suppress pro-Palestinian protesters.
The university has frequently seen anti-Israel regime protests. The 2024 campus anti-Israel student camp has sparked a nationwide movement.
This year, the school has returned to the spotlight this year, when it arrested Mahmoud Khalil, the university’s Palestinian protest leader. The Trump administration also cancelled $400 million in grants and contracts with schools earlier this year due to campus anti-Semitism. Colombia is negotiating with the administration to collect the funds.
A statement from Ivy League School in New York City said sanctions include expulsion, probation, revocation of the degree, and suspension of one to three years. Apartheid Dibust of Columbia University, a coalition of anti-Israel student groups, said nearly 80 students had been suspended or expelled.
The university said it would not comment on individual cases and would not announce the number of students being punished.
