“The Copenhagen public prosecutor’s office has filed the first case for violation of Article 110e(2) of the Danish Criminal Code regarding the improper handling of religious scriptures,” a statement from the public prosecutor’s office said on Friday, TRT reported.
The charges were made after Denmark’s Minister of Justice approved the recommendation to proceed with the case, the statement added.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the incident occurred on June 15, 2024, during the Bornholm People’s Festival. The suspects reportedly desecrated the Quran in public and in tents with the aim of sharing the act with a wider audience.
“The mishandling of the Qur’an in connection with an event during the People’s Festival, which spread to a wider audience with the participation of several people and was further filmed and live-streamed, made it public. “We believe that the incident took place on the spot,” Facebook said in a statement.
Prosecutor Liselotte Nilas confirmed that the suspects had been fined.
The case has been submitted to the Bornholm Island Court for scheduling, but no trial date has yet been set.
