TEHRAN – The University of Tehran has held an event entitled “Deposit Return Scheme Day,” which aims to raise awareness about the fight against plastic pollution and recycling of single-use beverage containers.
DRS involves adding a small deposit above the selling price to ensure that the drink is fully repaid when an empty bottle is returned by a consumer.
Hosted by the Arman Waste Management Company and supported by Connect Platform, the event will be held on February 17th and will include more than 150 national and national and professionals, including lecturers, environmental experts, vice president of science and technology, and environmental experts. DRS ensures that empty bottles are recycled in a systematic way, bringing over 90% bottle recycling in Norway, Germany and Finland, with over 50 countries around the world having a system.
There have been activities in Iran focused on this issue in the past few years, following the first national DRS conference held at the Iranian University of Science and Technology in 2022, followed by the Iranian DRS pilot project at the same university in 2024. Ta.

Notable Iranian scholars, including Dr. Ehsan Houshfar, Mohammad Darvish and Dr. Hossein Akhani, have expressed the benefits of Iran’s DRS system by examining global trends and results.
Jeff Angel (from Australia), Clarissa Morrowski (from Canada), and Melin Tinga (from the Netherlands) also worked on the event. Jeff Angel has published highlights of DRS activities in Australia, focusing on the spirit of teamwork and the outcome of a successful system, leading to more states taking part in the scheme.
Clarissa Morawski, a well-known environmental expert, gave a speech on the global trends in DRS and best practices for successful DRS implementation.
Dutch biologist and campaigner Merijn Tinga highlighted his activities in the fight against plastic pollution in the Netherlands, France and the UK. He encouraged everyone to work together to better manage waste.
The event ended with honoring the best student recycling officers and the organizers of DRS Day.
