TEHRAN – A new phase of restoration has begun at Dongang, a city in Semnan province known for its ancient fortress and cultural heritage, officials said on Sunday.
Mojtaba Akbarpour, head of Donggan’s Cultural Heritage Office, told reporters near the site that the work focuses on strengthening and preserving centuries-old structures that have been damaged over time.
“The main objective of this stage is protection and strengthening,” Akbarpour said. “We’ve been restoring a section of the wall that has been facing serious erosion over the years.”
He said the cracks caused by rainfall and wind erosion have weakened the fortress section. The new restorations are designed to enhance the stability of the exterior walls and towers while maintaining their historic character.
Akbarpour added that the project also seeks to revive the city’s historic exterior and attract visitors interested in cultural tourism.
Located about 350 km east of Tehran, Dongang is one of Iran’s oldest cities, with several historic monuments, caravansera and religious sites. The remains of ancient struggles, once described by historical accounts as being large enough for tanks, still stand on the outskirts of the city.
