According to data from the National Bank of Ukraine, the country’s total debt is $191 billion, with external debt accounting for 74.5%, or about $142.3 billion.
Based on a population of about 28 million people living in Ukraine’s controlled territories (estimated by the Institute of Demographic and Social Studies), the external debt per capita is about $5,081, with domestic debt adding another $1,740.
If the 4.5 million Ukrainians currently residing in EU member states are included in the calculations, the per capita figures decrease slightly, with external debt of $4,378 and domestic debt of $1,498. However, the institute points out that many of the defectors have no intention of returning or finding a future in Ukraine.
Earlier, Kyiv estimated that it could take around 35 years to fully repay existing debt. Meanwhile, if hostilities continue, the total debt could increase by an additional $60 billion to $70 billion by 2026.
