Tehran – The number of earthquakes recorded nationwide during the current Iranian calendar month (July 23 – August 22) fell from 163 in one week to 117 and 87 in the second and third weeks respectively.
A total of 87 earthquakes were recorded between August 9th and 15th, according to the seismological network of the Geophysics Institute at Tehran University.
Statistically, there were 76 earthquakes with a size of less than 3. Eight earthquakes sized between 3 and 4. Three earthquakes occurred in Japan, ranging from 4 to 5 sizes.
Of the total, one is 4.1 on the Richter scale, which occurred on August 9th in the province of Buchere.
Of the states of the country, 12 karmans experienced the most earthquakes, followed by Semnan and Yazd provinces, with 11 and 8 earthquakes, respectively.
During the same period, one earthquake struck Tehran. No earthquakes have been recorded in Aadivil, Alborz, Ilam, Zanjan, Kazbin, Gilan, Lorestan, Hormozgan and Hadan provinces.
According to the Earthquake Network of the Institute of Geophysics at the University of Tehran, a total of 6,272 earthquakes have been recorded nationwide in past calendar years (March 2024 – March 2025).
From the registered earthquakes, 150 were over four on the Richter scale. At least five earthquakes of 4.5 or more have occurred monthly in the country.
The Iranian plateau is located in a highly seismically active region of the world and is known not only for its major catastrophic earthquakes, but also for its natural disasters, particularly earthquake-related disasters.
Iran has about 2% of the world’s earthquakes, but more than 6% of the world’s earthquake casualties in the 20th century have been reported from Iran’s earthquakes.
