The Tehran-Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) has formally approved Iran’s proposal for implementing the international Carnet de Passages en Doune (CPD) system of member countries.
The initiative aims to promote temporary entry of private and commercial vehicles across borders within the ECO region, Mehr reported.
According to a statement from the Islamic Republic of Iran (TACI) tour and auto club, the proposal was first introduced with the support of Iran’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Crafts.
At the ECO Experts Conference in Turkey on April 30, a meeting of Eco Experts attended by TACI representatives reviewed plans to leverage the capabilities of the International Customs Transport Permit (Carnet de Passages) to promote temporary vehicles entry among Eco Member States.
The proposal was then finalized at the 10th meeting of the customs directors of ECO countries held in Tehran on May 28th. It was also incorporated into the final declaration of the summit.
The active role and technical presence of TACI in these negotiations served as important steps in introducing Iran’s capabilities in promoting international transport, cross-border car tourism and road travel.
Following this “success,” the initiative was discussed and approved at the 13th meeting of the Eco Ministers of Transport Ministers, held in Tehran on June 1-2. The summit was chaired by Iran and was attended by pastors from Iran, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, and vice ministers from Türkiye, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Mehr added that representatives from Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Transport, President of Eco Bank, and International Road Transport Union (IRU) and Traseka (short for Transport Europe Caucasus Asia).
The initiative is expected to boost road tourism and cultural exchanges across the region, while also strengthening Iran’s strategic role in international motor transport and tourism in Central and Western Asia.
The next Eco Transportation Ministers’ Meeting is scheduled to be held in Kazakhstan in 2026.
