After a brief stay in Israel, US President Donald Trump is expected to attend a signing ceremony in Egypt and join European, Arab and regional leaders in supporting the first phase of a Gaza ceasefire and hostage exchange plan that could halt the two-year conflict.
Egyptian officials said the event, hosted by President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, was aimed at releasing prisoners, a gradual Israeli withdrawal and ensuring broader humanitarian access. Trump is also scheduled to address parliament in occupied Jerusalem (al-Quds) and meet with families of prisoners of war beforehand.
The trip was scheduled to follow those of U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, who met in Egypt and Israel with the aim of shaping security and investment terms for a ceasefire.
With Gaza in ruins, at least 67,000 Palestinians killed and millions displaced, many see the summit not as a milestone but as a carefully staged moment — one that Trump wants to tout as his personal achievement.
