Musk, Tesla CEO and government efficiency director, re-shared the post on X Sunday, when he read “NOW NOW!”.
“It really should,” Musk wrote. “It makes no sense for America to pay for Europe’s defense.”
The current White House administration is building increasingly tense relationships with European NATO partners, with President Donald Trump repeatedly criticising Europe’s defence spending.
Trump is urging members of the Alliance to raise defensive spending to 5% of GDP. This is more important than any member, including the US, now spends. If the allies did not boost spending, Trump also threatened to withdraw from the alliance in his first term of office.
While many countries have pledged to make such changes, Trump said earlier this month that the US will not defend NATO members who don’t pay enough for their own defense.
It is a crucial time for Europe as the US appears to be pulling away from Kiev, but it is trying to strengthen its support for Ukraine. Trump announced he would suspend military aid earlier this month following dramatic clashes in his oval office with Ukrainian President Volodymea Zelensky.
