Israeli occupation forces fired warning shots when foreign diplomats visited Palestinian West Bank, said the military apologised for the incident after Palestinian authorities accused the forces of “deliberately” shooting at the delegation.
AFP footage from the crime scene in Jenin, the West Bank city of Jordan River, a frequent target of Israeli military raids, showed a delegation and accompanying journalists running for cover so that the shots could be heard.
No injuries were reported in the incident that elicited quick criticisms from Spain and Italy.
The Palestinian Foreign Ministry has condemned “a heinous crime committed by Israeli occupation forces who intentionally targeted a certified diplomatic delegation to the Palestinian state during an outdoor visit.”
Kaja Kallas, head of foreign policy for the EU, called on Israel to investigate and retain “accountability.”
“The threat to the lives of diplomats is unacceptable,” Karas said.
Belgium is also demanding explanations.
“The delegation has deviated from the approved route and entered areas where they are not permitted,” the Israeli military said in a statement.
