Iran’s Minister of Justice and International Affairs, Qasem Galibabadi, was quoted as speaking at the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee meeting of Parliament on Sunday, and explained to lawmakers about the latest developments on Iran-E3 discussions in Istanbul and the intentions of the trio.
According to a spokesman for the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Ebrahim Rezai, the snapback will implement six previous Iran-related Security Council resolutions adopted between 2006 and 2010.
It also imposes export controls, travel bans, assets freezes and other restrictions on individuals, entities and banks.
Rezai, a spokesman for the committee, said Galibabadi attended the session and outlined the measures taken by Iran’s Foreign Ministry on snapbacks.
In a letter to lawmakers addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Aragut said E3 lacked the legal, political or moral authority to formally invoke the snapback mechanism of the 2015 nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
The letter was also forwarded to the Security Council and its members’ presidents, as well as the EU’s senior representative, Kaja Karas.
According to Rezaei, Gharibabadi said Iran, Russia and China had held trilateral meetings to discuss Tehran’s response to possible triggering snapback mechanisms.
He added that Iranian negotiators have also reiterated the importance of implementing previously approved laws to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) following the politically motivated resolution.
Galibabadi added that during talks held in Istanbul in late July, Iranian negotiators protested the positions of three European countries regarding their refusal to condemn Israeli US aggression against the Islamic Republic, attacks on nuclear facilities and war crimes.
Iranian diplomats have again argued that they rely on respecting the country’s rights, including compensation to Tehran for losses that occurred during the 12-day US-Israel invasion, Rezaei said.
