Parliament Speaker Mohammad Berger Ghalibaf assessed the current situation of some foreign actors and spoke about recent developments in the international political field in an interview with local Iranian media on Tuesday.
“My assessment is that European foreign policy is today at the weakest stage in its history, due to some of the most clumsy decisions,” Ghalibaf said.
“In the case of the JCPOA, after the US withdrawal, European countries finally activated the snapback mechanism under direct pressure from the US,” he said, adding, “With this action, Europe effectively eliminated its role in the Iranian nuclear issue and was taken out of the game.”
“Europe is not playing its own role in the Ukraine crisis, and its actions are limited to two things: 1. Financing weapons purchases from the United States. 2. Buying expensive gas from the United States to supply its people,” he added.
“With these two wrong strategic decisions, Europe has completely lost its influence and role at regional and global levels,” Ghalibaf said.
In October, France, Germany and the UK, the three European powers that were part of the Iran nuclear deal known as the JCPOA, activated a snapback mechanism that would reverse previous UN sanctions against Iran. After the United States withdrew from the illegal deal in 2018, Iran, Russia, and China viewed the move as illegitimate because the three countries failed to fulfill their commitments to the JCPOA.
