In a call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragci, foreign ministers, top diplomats in the UK, France, Germany and the EU, have reiterated their decision to induce a UN snapback sanctions mechanism if there is no reliable progress every fall.
A report in France Chapter 24 warns Iran that it is ready to trigger a UN “snapback” mechanism. If Tehran does not make any concrete progress by reviving nuclear deals by the end of summer.
Iran’s Foreign Minister has highlighted the urgency to return to diplomacy amid growing tensions after Israel and the US were hit by Iran’s nuclear site in June.
Diplomats from the UK, France, Germany and the European Union told Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragut, “the resolve to use a ‘snapback’ mechanism – allowing for the re-enactment of all international sanctions against Iran.”
Tehran and Washington engaged in negotiations led by Iranian Foreign President Abbas Aragut and President Donald Trump’s foreigner Steve Witkov, who held five rounds of indirect talks through Oman when Israel launched a series of unattacked attacks.
On Monday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaille Bagaei said at a briefing at a press conference that the so-called snapback mechanism has no legal or political basis, and that the threat of calling it is purely a political manipulation aimed at confronting Iran.
“With recent developments over the past few weeks, it’s more pointless than ever to resort to such unfounded mechanisms that undermine legal, ethical or political basis,” he added.
He believes Iran is still a party to the JCPOA, and stressed that the decline in commitment is a legitimate response to trade violations in the US and other political parties. He pointed out this is the correct thing outlined in the JCPOA.
Baghaei also criticized European political parties for continuing to misuse snapback clauses while failing to support his obligations under the contract. “They have no legal or moral status to activate such mechanisms,” he concluded.
