Tehran – To celebrate National Day of the Persian Gulf, an exquisite new atlas dedicated to strategic waters and its three islands (Musa and fewer tambu) will be announced at a special ceremony on April 30th.
According to Hamidreza Soleymani, CEO of Daffineh Museum Group, The Atlas is a unique geographical collection featuring 27 historical maps collected from the group’s rich archives.
“Maps created by well-known European cartographers for centuries offer rare glimpses of the historical perspective of the Persian Gulf region. The oldest maps in the collection date back to the 17th century,” Soleimani said.
Soleimani added that Atlas is listed in both Persian and English. He emphasized that beyond its artistic and historical values, the work makes the importance of scientific and research important.
“These maps serve as reliable visual documents reflecting European views of the Persian Gulf over various periods, providing valuable insight into the region’s place names, geographical features, and historical trade and political interactions,” he said.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Soleimani highlighted three important aspects of Atlas’ importance.
Historical Document: This map provides an unparalleled record of the geographical and political developments of the region over time.
Preserving Identity: This publication strengthens the historical name and identity of the Persian Gulf and demonstrates consistent perceptions in a global map that has been well-known for its centuries.
Public Awareness: By making these historical documents accessible, Atlas aims to enhance a general understanding of the historical and cultural importance of the Persian Gulf.
He described Atlas as a wealth of resources for researchers and a reliable reference for those seeking to better discover the history and geography of the Persian Gulf.
National Day of the Persian Gulf, observed annually on the 10th day of Ordibehesht in the Iranian calendar (April 30th this year), commemorates the history, name and importance of the region. It marks the historic 1622 victory when Safavid Empire and the British East India Company expelled the Portuguese troops from the Strategic Straits of Hormuz.
The Persian Gulf, an extension of the Indian Ocean, is located between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia.
