At a media meeting on Monday, Ayatollah emphasized that the FATF was not being discussed in the council.
Ayatollah Larijani said that Palermo and CFT are separate issues from FATF, and that the FATF stipulates that Palermo and CFT must be approved.
The FATF has not been discussed at all by the Council. He added that because it was not introduced to the council, the council is only looking at CFT and Palermo, which were approved by the council (Majlis) and criticised by the council.
Previously, a committee of the Iran’s Comfort Council approved a bill related to the FATF | (Financial Action Task Force), known as PALERMO and CFT.
Hossein Mozaffar said the EC’s joint committee has approved its entry into Iran’s Financial Action Task Force (FATF), Palermo and CFT (to counter terrorist financing).
He said, “However, an EC contract on this issue requires most of three-quarters of the members’ votes,” adding that the path to final approval of the bill is likely to be bumpy.
Mozaffar further said that the final decision on Iran’s membership in the FATF-related bill will be made in the next Iranian year, 1404, starting on March 22nd.
Supporters of Iran’s accession to these FATF-related bills argue that accepting the practice can ease the pressure on the country’s foreign sanctions.
