TEHRAN – Military Attaches delegations from 20 foreign embassies stationed in Tehran visited Evin Prison on Tuesday to tour sections that were recently damaged during Israeli missile attacks.
The visit was organized to provide direct insight into what Iranian officials described as clear examples of state terrorism and as clear examples of illegal attacks on non-military sites. During the tour, military representatives were described for the destruction and nature of Israel’s strike targeting unarmed detainees and facilities living in administrative infrastructure.
Officials stressed that attacks on Evin Prison, widely known for detaining a mix of security, politics and white-coloured prisoners constitute a violation of international law, particularly given the facilities are not serving aggressive military purposes.
Representatives from several countries, including the Netherlands, Brazil, Pakistan, Kazakhstan and Oman, participated in the visit. Attache was shown in areas of structural damage and provided a report outlining Israel’s broader impact on Iran’s infrastructure in recent years.
On June 23, as part of a wider attack on Iran, the Israeli regime launched an air strike at Evin Prison, killing 79 people, including prison staff, soldiers, prisoners, visiting families and civilians living nearby. The attacks that occurred during visits also targeted the prison medical centre and nearby units.
Judicial spokesman Asgal Jahangir described the strike as a “full war crime” and said it occurred when prisoners were with their families and social workers, causing serious physical and economic damage to the surrounding area.
After the incident, Iranian authorities moved the inmates to other detention facilities in Tehran to ensure their safety.
The airstrikes at Evin Prison were part of a wider Israeli attack that began on June 13, during which the regime assassinated several Iranian military commanders, nuclear scientists and civilians. A few days later, the US joined the escalation by bombing three Iranian nuclear sites. This was condemned by Tehran as a serious violation of the UN Charter, International Law and the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
In response, Iranian troops launched a precision strike on key targets in Qatar’s Israeli-occupied territories and in Qatar’s Aldeid US Air Base, the largest US military facility in West Asia.
On June 24, Iran declared that the retaliation operation successfully halted the illegal attack, strengthened its deterrent, and sent a clear message to both Tel Aviv and Washington.
