Nicolas Sarkozy, who served as France’s president from 2007 to 2012, was sentenced to five years in prison over campaign finance charges and will serve his sentence in a cell at La Santé prison, BFMTV reported, citing sources familiar with the sentence.
According to the report, the prison in Paris has a section for inmates who require special security measures. Mr Sarkozy will likely be placed in solitary confinement due to his age (70 years old) and popularity.
A Paris court sentenced Sarkozy to five years in prison for accepting Libyan funds to fund his 2007 campaign.
The former president was also fined 100,000 euros. Additionally, Mr. Sarkozy was found guilty of participating in a criminal conspiracy, but was acquitted of embezzlement of public funds and concealment of passive corruption. This means that the court did not find that there was any illegal funding of the 2007 election campaign.
