Former Ambassador to Iran (2001-2005) Alexander Marysov wrote a contribution to Mare to explain his country’s role in the recently launched indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States.
For Russia, the Middle East is a neighbouring region and is a situation that directly affects Russia’s security. Therefore, the actual actions of Moscow aim to resolve the issues and conflicts that exist here.
One of them most pressing is the development of the situation regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
Russia has always advocated solutions to Iran’s nuclear issue through political and diplomatic means, and has welcomed the agreement between Washington and Tehran to hold talks on the nuclear issue. Moscow is ready to become a mediator in such a lecture, but the decision is up to the participants. They chose Oman for the first round of negotiations, but that continues.
Russia supports Iran’s position to negotiate with equal and mutual respect in a calm, non-traditional atmosphere. Moscow believes it is unacceptable and counterproductively demanding America’s “peace by force” strategy, threat and ultimatum policy. Russia will consider Iran’s rights to be the NPT’s party and develop it to make its peaceful nuclear program legitimate and inviolable.
Iran’s nuclear issue is also being discussed during the recent reopening of Russian-American talks, along with issues resolving the Ukrainian conflict and developing bilateral relations.
Moscow is trying to explain to Washington the urgent need for mutually acceptable concessions and compromises to ease tensions over Iran’s nuclear program and generally improve the local situation.
Russia hopes that Washington and Tehran will demonstrate goodwill, common sense and reach agreements to lay the foundation for a final peaceful solution to Iran’s nuclear issue.
