France is “deterred” to recognize the Palestinian state, its foreign minister said Tuesday, condemning the “irrefutable” situation in Gaza created by military campaigns and humanitarian blockades, Al-Monitor reported.
Foreign Minister Jean Noel Barott also reaffirmed that Paris supported the Dutch-led initiative for reviewing a cooperation agreement between the European Union and Israel that could affect political and economic relations.
President Emmanuel Macron revealed at a UN conference in June that France could become the latest European nation to recognize the Palestinian state.
“We cannot leave a legacy of violence and hatred for Gaza children, so all this has to stop. That’s why we are determined to recognize the Palestinian state,” Barot told France Inter Radio.
“And I’m actively working towards this because we want to contribute to political solutions not only to the interests of the Palestinians, but to the security of Israel,” he added.
