Annalena Bearbock, former German Foreign Minister and president of the 80th UN General Assembly, underscored the urgent need for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza at a high-level “two-state solutions” meeting in New York.
Speaking at the event, Bearbock said the world cannot ignore the suffering of civilians.
She called for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent halt in Gaza, urged Israel to reach civilians, and demanded Hamas be released of Israeli prisoners. Baerbock also warned that continuing expansion of settlements in the West Bank and East Al-Quds would undermine the prospects of political solutions.
She emphasized the need to establish a sovereign, independent Palestinian state within internationally recognized borders. She also made a controversial call for Hamas to disperse and abandon its weapons without referring to Israeli military action in the region.
