“Gaza has become a land of despair,” said Philip Lazarini, head of the UN agency of the Palestinian Refugees UNRWA, X.
Hunger spreads, deepens, caution, and artificial. ”
Since March 2, after 18 months of devastating war and lockdowns of Israeli aid, the UN has warned of the dire humanitarian situation for the 2.4 million residents of Palestinian territory.
Israel has accused Palestinian extremist groups of diverting aid, which Hamas has denied.
The head of the 12 major aid organization warned last Thursday that “hunger is not just a risk, it is likely to unfold rapidly in almost every part.”
“You can see a clear trend towards a complete disaster,” Jens Laerke, a spokesman for the UN Humanitarian Organization OCHA, told reporters in Geneva on Tuesday.
“At the moment, it’s probably the worst humanitarian situation we’ve seen during the war in Gaza.”
In his post in X, Lazarini questioned, “How long will it be before the hollow denunciation lift the siege, resuming the ceasefire, and translated into actions to save anything left behind by humanity?”
The Unrwa chief accused two million people in Gaza, most of them women and children of being “collective punished.”
“The injured, the sick and the elderly are deprived of medical supplies and care,” he said.
“Humanitarian assistance is used as a negotiation tip and a weapon of war,” he accused.
“The siege must be lifted. Supplies must flow in, hostages must be released. The ceasefire must resume.”
