Saturday’s demonstration was organized by members of Generation Z, but ended with strong support from older opposition supporters.
“This mobilization progressed and developed peacefully for many hours, until a group of hooded men began acts of violence,” Mexico City’s head of security, Pablo Vázquez, said in a statement.
He reported that 100 police officers were injured, 40 of whom required hospital treatment for bruises and cuts, and 20 protesters were injured.
Mr. Sheinbaum, who has been in power since October 2024, maintains an approval rating of more than 70% but has faced criticism for his security policies following several high-profile murders.
Many of the demonstrators held banners and wore hats to pay homage to Carlos Alberto Manzo Rodriguez, the mayor of Uruapan, Michoacán. Carlos Alberto Manzo Rodríguez was assassinated on November 1 after leading a campaign against drug lords in the town.
“He was killed because he was a man who was sending police into the mountains to fight the thugs,” said Rosa Maria Avila, 65, a real estate agent traveling from Michoaca state. “He had the courage to stand up to them.”
“We need more security,” said Andres Massa, a 29-year-old business consultant who carried a pirate skull flag that has become a global symbol of Gen Z protests.
