The German Foreign Ministry defended its decision on Saturday to classify the alternative fürdeutschland (AFD) party as right-wing extremists after acute criticism from the White House.
US Vice President JD Vance accused the “bureaucrats” of rebuilding the Berlin Wall, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio of designating the designation as “despotism in disguise.”
Amidst the extraordinary movement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded directly to Rubio of X, saying, “We have learned from history that we need to stop right-wing extremism.”
The Intelligence Agency, which categorized, found that the AFD’s “general understanding of people based on ethnicity and descent” was contrary to Germany’s “free democratic order.”
The AFD placed second in the federal election in February, winning a record 152 seats in the 630-seat Congress with 20.8% of the votes.
The agency Bundesamtfürverfassungsschutz (BFV) had already classified AFD as a right-wing extremist in the most popular eastern state. Now the designation has been extended to the entire party.
The AFD “substantiates certain population groups from equal participation in society,” the statement said in a statement. The agency specifically stated that the party does not consider citizens “mainly from Muslim countries” as equal members of Germans.
