Originally published in 2021, this vigorous account of the war, from prehistoric times to nuclear proliferation and deadly autonomous weapons, is this critical feature of human society.
The war has changed, but we don’t have it. From our hunter-gatherer ancestors to our rivals’ nuclear powers today, we went to battle every time resources were contested. Celebrated historian Gwyn Dyer illuminated many of our fighting conflicts with this lively account, tracking the war from prehistoric times to the world’s first cities, and firearms changed everything It follows the 1000-year “Classic Era” that was eventually completed. He examines the brief interlude of “limited wars” before the 18th century revolution reached “all wars,” and how devastation was halted by Hiroshima’s nuclear shock.
Then came the Cold War and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. For all advanced technology and hyper-connected global society, I am, as climate change is strengthening competition for resources and ready with atomic bombs, drones and futuristic “autonomous” weapons under development. They find themselves on the brink once again.
Throughout, Dyer explores anthropology, psychology, and other related fields to uncover the factors of conflict. “The Shortest History of War” is for those who want to understand the role of war in human stories and those who can prevent it from defining our future.
