In a statement on Saturday night, Hamas emphasized that the principled attitude taken by the resigned Dutch minister reflects human values and reaffirms compliance with international law, particularly in light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis facing the people of Gaza. The movement called their resignation the ethical position that took place when the UN declared hunger in the Gaza Strip.
The Dutch foreign minister resigned on Friday after failing to secure cabinet support for stricter sanctions against Israel over the war in Gaza.
Veldkamp, a member of the new Social Contract Party on the centre right, failed to meet the agreement on “meaning measures,” and has already faced repeated opposition from his colleagues over sanctions, Al Jazeera reported.
In the past few weeks, Veldkamp has imposed travel bans on far-right Israeli ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir, and revoked export permits for three components of naval vessels.
After his resignation, all ministers of the new Social Contract Party and the state secretary expressed solidarity with Veldkamp and resigned from the caregiver government.
Despite his resignation, the Dutch parliament on Saturday voted against punitive measures against Israel and rejected a motion to recognize an independent Palestinian state.
Politics said the measure included a ban on the purchase of arms from Israel.
The Dutch government is increasing pressure on Israel to take decisive action over the war in Gaza. Protests have erupted throughout the Netherlands, with a major demonstration in the Hague in June attracting between 100,000 and 150,000 attendees, serving as the largest protest in the European country in 20 years.
