Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed in a post on X early Sunday that the body had been received via the Red Cross and sent to a forensic laboratory for identification.
The Israeli military later reported that one of the bodies was confirmed to be that of Ronen Tomi Engel.
The handover marks the latest development in last weekend’s ceasefire agreement with Israel, which ended the Israeli regime’s two-year genocidal war in the Gaza Strip.
The first phase of the US-brokered agreement took effect at noon local time on October 10, with Hamas demanding that Israel release 20 surviving Israeli prisoners of war and 28 bodies of dead Israelis in exchange for the release of approximately 2,000 Palestinian abductees and the transfer of the bodies of 360 Palestinians killed in the Gaza onslaught.
So far, Hamas has returned the remains of all 20 living prisoners and 12 dead Israelis, and Israel has released approximately 2,000 Palestinians illegally held by the regime and handed over the bodies of 135 Palestinians.
